Diabetes - Coming of Age

People with diabetes do not convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy effectively, either because they do not produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or because their insulin no longer works properly (type 2 diabetes).
People with undiagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes are at risk of heart disease and may develop other major health problems such as hypertension, stroke, kidney failure and limb amputation.
Diabetes can be controlled with healthy eating, regular exercise and, in some cases, tablets or insulin injections. However, diabetes cannot be cured at this stage.
Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are major risk factors for risk of type 2 diabetes, and because these factors are increasing in Australia, so too is the incidence of type 2 diabetes.
About 930,000 people in Australia have type 2 diabetes, but only half of these people know that they have the disease. This means there are many Australians have undiagnosed diabetes!
